Elitist? President Barack Obama’s trip to “Palm Beach” is causing a stir among political wonks (Special to Gossip Extra)

flag-exclusivePresident Barack Obama‘s catching flack over his President’s Day weekend golf outing in Palm City!

Even if a reporter critical of the president yesterday mistook Palm City for Palm Beach!

According to transcripts of a chat between journos and White House Deputy Press Secretary Josh Earnest as the president traveled to Georgia aboard Air Force One yesterday, someone asked Earnest about the “symbolism” of Obama coming to “Palm Beach” for r’n'r.

The reporter, identified on the transcripts obtained by Gossip Extra only as Jim, seemed a little confused.

Obama indeed is flying to Palm Beach International Airport about 8 p.m. tonight, but then he’ll travel 30 minutes north to The Floridian. He’ll be there until Monday.

The Floridian is a private golf resort, super swanky indeed, but it’s near Stuart in Martin County.

And it’s owned by Democratic donor and Houston Astros owner Jim Crane, one of the friends with whom Obama is expected to chill.

Why is it a big deal?

In the context of U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio‘s claims that he still lives in the “working-class” West Miami suburb where he grew up, upper-class perks are becoming an issue — even for the commander-in-chief.

Here’s the exchange between Earnest and the reporter:

Q    Can I ask you about Palm Beach this weekend?  What is the President going to be doing?  Is he meeting with donors of any kind?  Is he staying at a private home or in a hotel?  Is this — what kind of trip is this?

MR. EARNEST:  As you point out,  Jim, the President is traveling to Chicago for an event to talk about the economy tomorrow morning — or early afternoon.  And then after that event, he’s traveling to Florida where he’s going to spend President’s Day weekend relaxing with some friends.  There’s no work on the schedule.

Q    What about the image of Palm Beach?  Is he going to be — even Marco Rubio in his response was pointing out about how middle class he is.  He seemed to have the Republicans on the ropes in that way.  What is the symbolism of going to Palm Beach for the weekend where so much money is, and where donors are always at?

MR. EARNEST:  The President is going to enjoy the President’s Day weekend with some friends, and I don’t think — as we’ve discussed, the President of the United States is the President of the United States 24 hours a day, and will fulfill his responsibilities as President even while he’s getting some well-deserved downtime with some friends this weekend.  I don’t think the American people will begrudge him that.
