A successful West Palm Beach eye doctor saw his West Palm Beach offices raided by FBI agents last night in a mushrooming U. S. Senate sex scandal.
Ophthalmologist Salomon Melgen, who also has clinics in Wellington, Port St. Lucie and Delray Beach, is believed to have offered free trips and procured underage prostitutes in his native Dominican Republic for U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez, a prominent Democratic Party leader who represents New Jersey.
The G-men were seen carrying box after box of documents out of Melgen’s Metrocentre Boulevard office and stack them neatly in waiting vans.
The Miami Herald today reports that Melgen and Menendez are both in the FBI’s crosshairs after two prostitutes in the DR claimed they had sex with Menendez in his house in the resort town of Casa de Campo.
Melgen donated hundreds of thousands to the Democratic Party over the years and formed close friendships with several Hispanic figures, including Menendez.
Melgen’s house in the DR is in the same neighborhood as Palm Beach sugar barons Pepe and Alfie Fanjul and singer Julio Iglesias.
Menendez has denied allegations he traveled to the DR for sex.
Melgen, meanwhile, isn’t talking. His biography on his clinics’ websites was disabled this morning.
