Antonio Mora, a weekday prime-time anchor at WFOR-Channel 4 in Miami/Fort Lauderdale, was let go Monday after station honchos refused to renew his contract.
The happy-go-lucky Mora, 57, was the solo anchor of the station’s 6 p.m. news.
Mora didn’t return calls to his Coral Gables home, and his page on the station’s website was taken down first thing Monday morning.
While he refused to discuss personnel matters, CBS 4 spokesman Lee Zimmerman issued this statement: “Antonio has been a valued member of the CBS4 News team throughout his five years here. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”
One of Mora’s colleagues, who asked not to be named, described Mora as “a nice guy” who was known to bring cookies into the CBS affiliate’s newsroom to make everyone feel comfortable.
Thing is: Mora also had one of South Florida cushiest jobs!
He was on-the-air for a grand total of 20 minutes a day, plus two or three 30-second cut-ins in the afternoon.
Another newsroom source speculated that Mora may have been one of the highest-paid newsroom dwellers since he moved from the much-larger Chicago market in 2008.
Mora will be remembered for his laughing fit in 2010 after he said the word “penis” while reading a medical story:
