Red, Downtown at the Gardens’ fresh new hip tapas bar in Palm Beach Gardens, opened this week to large crowds — despite the nearby hurricane Sandy.

Nearly 300 VIPs Wednesday, and the general public starting Thursday, sampled the grill’s food from five countries as well as an extensive cocktail list centered on vodka martinis and sangria.

With dominant red throughout, one of the first things that newcomers notice are the giant bright-red lips in the back.

The bar is outfitted with a liquid counter-top, which the VIPs played with all night.

From the owners of the nearby Mexican eatery Cabo Flats, Red occupies the space on the mall’s main access road left vacant by the group’s fancier 51 Supper Club.

As for the menu, Gossip Extra recommends: tuna ceviche, bacon wrapped dates, red duck and waffle, lamb chops and shrimp flatbread!
