Lobbyist’s Law Firm Filed Foreclosure Against Broward Commissioner

Awkward situation in Broward County politics:

The lawfirm of Moskowitz, Mandell, Salim & Simowitz is representing Wells Fargo in a foreclosure action against County Commissioner Chip LaMarca.

Why is that awkward?

Firm frontman Mike Moskowitz is a lobbyist whose firm makes hundreds of thousands in contracts doled out by the commission.

He’s also a close friend of several of LaMarca’s colleagues on the commission.

And Moskowitz is a big deal Democrat while LaMarca once ran the Broward Republicans.

Gossip Extra revealed last week how the 40-year-old LaMarca, a rookie commissioner who ran on fiscal responsibility, faces foreclosure of his homestead in Lighthouse Point.

According to court records, LaMarca stopped paying his second mortgage’s $1,006 per month in August 2010, shortly before he was elected.

It took Moskowitz until May 2012 to file the foreclosure action, in which it is claimed LaMarca owes the bank $388,000!

One credit repair specialist told me it takes about six months for banks to file foreclosure actions in Broward County. There is not explanation in the file on why LaMarca’s foreclosure took nearly two years.

Neither Moskowitz nor Scott Simowitz, the partner who’s assigned the LaMarca foreclosure, returned repeated calls for comment. LaMarca and his lawyer aren’t calling back either.

Moskowitz is considered a close ally of commissioners Ilene Lieberman and Stacy Ritter.
