Katie Holmes, big screen superstar Tom Cruise‘s wife of five years, has filed for divorce!

Cruise, 49, has been involved with the publicity tour for Rock of Ages, which has bombed, and routinely showed up on red carpets and in interviews without Holmes.

The 33-year-old Holmes, who starred on the TV series Dawson’s Creek, has been holed up in New York City with their 6-year-old daughter, Suri, sparking questions from the press about the relationship with Cruise.

“This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family,” said Holmes’ attorney. “Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.”

Rumor is that Holmes filed yesterday in Manhattan, blindsiding Cruise.

Cruise, the star of the Mission: Impossible franchise and mega-hits like Top Gun and Minority Report, has been married three times. His highest-profile union remains his 11 years with actress Nicole Kidman, a marriage during which the two adopted two children from the Palm Beach County area.

He was first hitched to Mimi Rogers, also an actress.

Cruise’s unlikely pairing with Holmes shocked entertainment observers amid rumors it had been orchestrated by high-level officials in the Church of Scientology, of which both Cruise and Holmes are members, to quash rumors Cruise is gay.

    Where’s the Splitville story about Jose & Alina? You seem to revel in everyone else’s divorce and misery, so why don’t you give us details on one you actually have facts about?
