West Palm Beach Police Captain in Sex Scandal Wins Short Reprieve

A high-ranking West Palm Beach cop whose alleged affair with a police officer landed him in a heap of trouble was given a one-week reprieve from being fired.

Capt. Randy Maale, who’s still on the command staff, has until Wednesday to turn evidence that his alleged mistakes are being committed by other supervisors — and they’re going unpunished.

Maale was supposed to be fired officially Wednesday, but City Administrator Ed Mitchell gave him a chance to back up his claims.

“I have absolutely no comment,” Maale told me today.

What is Maale accused of?

As Gossip Extra first reported in November, 25-year veteran Maale served a week-long suspension for allowing his troop’s morale to sink as he personally handed posh assignment to his alleged galpal, P.O. Cathy Cognetti.

That story caused more complaints to pour onto Internal Affairs, which recently completed two more investigations into Maale’s behavior.

He was found to have allowed on-duty West Palm Beach cops into a 2010 Memorial Day barbecue at his Palm Beach Gardens home! And surveillance videos showed Maale worked out in the WPBPD gym with Cognetti while she was supposed to be on medical light duty.

“He’s trying to claim that what he’s been doing is not unusual at the PD,” said a source familiar with Maale’s meeting with Michell. “So Ed told him to prove it.”

Maale told Mitchell he doesn’t deserved to be fired but he would accept a demotion to lieutenant.
